Computer Studies Laptop

Laptop computers although they are mainly proprietary and are specific to the different model and manufacturers specifications tend to follow certain construction methods, so the similarities become evident when taking them apart to be repaired, when removing screws or component parts it's always advisable to lay them out in some form of pattern that can remind you of where the screws and components came from and in what order they were removed and document the procedure so that they can be replaced in the same way, another method would be to take digital photographs of each stage of the process so that it's well documented, visual inspection and a good sense of feeling for any other obstructions while removing any part of the computer are essential practices to observe be patient and gently with the computer this all helps in avoiding damaging any of the computers various component parts.

  • The first step in dismantling a laptop is make sure the AC power adapter and the battery are removed, you don't want to have any charge going to the computer when you're working on the laptop for your own safety and also that of the computer it's always best to avoid any chance of electro static discharge and risking any of the components being fried so make sure your work area is properly grounded to avoid any risk of causing any unnecessary damage.
  • The second step would be to remove any components that are easily accessible such as hard drives, RAM or memory modules, CD/DVD drives, wireless cards making sure to remove the antenna wires first before removing the wireless card and any cables that are easily accessible should be detached from their connectors.
  • The next step would be to remove the LCD screen to get that out of the way to avoid damaging the screen and making it easier for working on the rest of the laptop, this can be easily accessible from the hinge cover plate above the keyboard, you may need to remove some screws from the bottom and sides of the laptop depending on the model in order to remove the cover, a good rule to follow is you shouldn't need to force anything that needs to be removed, so care and patience is always the best course of action to take.
  • With the cover plate removed the next task would be removing the keyboard this is normally attached by some screws at the top of the keyboard and remember to be careful when detaching the ribbon cable that attaches the keyboard to the motherboard make sure it's released from both sides so you do not damage the connector, now the keyboard and the cover plate have been removed the wires and connectors such as the LCD cable and the leads to the wireless card should be removed, after this has been done the screws on the hinges can be removed releasing the LCD screen from the base of the computer, it's as well to release any of the other ribbon cables and component boards that are now easily accessible and any other screws before turning the base unit over.
  • After turning the base unit over the remaining screws can now be removed and care should be taken separating the two halves of the base unit from each other, you shouldn't need to force the base unit apart, always check that there are no screws that have been overlooked if it shows signs of resisting and doesn't separate easily.
  • The base unit can now be stripped down for the removal of the motherboard, the speakers can be detached, the motherboard normally has some form of markings (Usually white arrows) next to the screws that should be removed to release the motherboard from the base unit, the processors heat sink can also be removed, its recommended to release the screws on the heat sink similar to the way you would remove a wheel from a car, gradually releasing each screw a bit at a time, so that you do not cause any damage to the processor. To replace the components is a simple matter of reversing the dismantling process after repairing or replacing any faulty component. With the computer being stripped right down it's also a good time to clean the components using a soft brush, blowing out any dust with a can of compressed air and any other method of cleaning the components using the recommended cleaning procedures while you have the chance.
